Peru: An Orchid Paradise

“Orchids are unusual in form, uncommonly beautiful in color intricate in structure … the most highly evolved of all flowering plants.”  Susan Orlean, The Orchid Thief

Soon to come: a piece for Berkshire HomeStyle called “Stories Orchids Tell” on Peru’s rainforest orchids and the people conserving, researching  and filming them. In the meantime, at the base here is a link to my recent album that shows the majesty of the Inka sites and the Andean people.

This orchid belongs to the Masdevallia genus. Found in the wild in northwestern Peru,  it is known as Gallo-Gallo, or “rooster” after the rooster-like red comb, crest and wattles of the flower.
