A fundamental starting point focuses on how the client will best come to appreciate and enjoy the gardens.
In-depth discussions on personal goals and objectives—as well as budget, take place throughout the project with a focus on the long-term.
First assessed are the barebones of the garden. Buildings, walkways, terraces, stone walls — all are crucial to the planning process. A detailed site analysis is also performed: topography, soil evaluation, sun or shade factors, water, invasive species and more. (See article on Soil – do link)
A general overview and informal inventory of the existing vegetation is also performed. Before introducing new plant material, Honey believes in “recycling” plants. Editing is key here.
With a specific — but always flexible plan, Honey closely oversees and directs garden installations, working either with the client, his or her gardeners or her own sub-contractors.
Gardens inherently change and require time to evolve and fine-tuning. Honey advocates the long-term picture, one that involves an ongoing relationship with the client and, last but not least a maintenance plan!
