At first, I didn’t pay much attention. Perhaps the monarchs were the competing culprits. Besides, this didn’t seem to be the jacarandas’ “moment”. It was simply too early in my book — although I’m not shy to say I’m a neophyte here. And how perfect to learn that the term comes from the Greek, neophutos or “newly planted”!

One day, while strolling through town, the tall jacarandas’ almost bare branches caught my eye. High above and barely perceptible, were clusters of baby blossoms shyly peeking out. Now they were coming into their own, offering the sky a splash of mauve that was growing more bold as the days progressed.
